You can always spend gold on low-level racial troops to bulk up your forces instead of using precious research on your class units. Empire Upgrades take effect immediately and Global Spells as soon as you cast them, and they upgrade your whole empire without any further investment. Other than the lowest-level summons (which get priority for early game scouting), and maybe also healers, I prefer to research force-multipliers like Empire Upgrades and Global Spells. Any investment is only worth it if you use it. And they'll perform admirably for very little upkeep. At that point you need reinforce your front lines or do a better job at intercepting attacking armies.Īrchers will hold their own against tier 1, tier 2, and even many tier 3 units, particularly if you've got them behind stone walls. They're going to be wiped out, which is only fair. Once tier 4 units start showing up your archers just aren't going to cut it anymore. While this will protect your city against a sneak attack, you're going to need more firepower to defend against a full on assault. You can easily afford to protect every city with a full stack of archers. They're also only tier 1 units with an upkeep of 4 gold per turn.Ī full stack is only going to cost you 24 gold per turn. Archers are terrible vs mechanical units, but they're highly effective against anything living. Elven archers are particularly nasty with their longbows.

Stacks of archers are a cheap, easily produced, and effective garrison. Otherwise a single unit will sneak by and it will capture a city. Its always a good idea to garrison every city, if only lightly.
